LOCATION AND DATES

As we have over the past 10 years, we’ll be holding our reunion in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina at the Beach Cove Resort.  They always do a great job for us.  They did a home run last year with their reception buffet and with the fine Mexican-style dinner buffet.  It was their first year with a new chef, and you can look forward to another winner this year!

 

The reunion will begin at 5:00 PM on Saturday 16 September, 2017 with a reception, and will end Tuesday morning, 19 September, 2017 after breakfast.  Don’t forget though, that for those of you arriving early, we’ll be doing our usual group dinner at Thoroughbred’s Restaurant on the evening of 15 September, so you might want to consider the actual dates to be there as 15 through 19 September.

 

FRIDAY, 15 SEPTEMBER

As noted above, Friday is the day before the official start date of the reunion.  Over the years, we’ve always had those who arrive one, two or even more days early to enjoy the beach.  As a result, over the last many years we’ve arranged a group dinner on Friday evening for those early arrivals who want to participate.  Thoroughbred’s Restaurant has outstanding service, yummy food, and provide us their special coach prices…a combination that’s unlikely to be beaten.  We’ll use them again this year for a 6:30 PM dinner.  As I said, this will be on an “opt in” basis and you’ll see further down these “bare bones” how you can sign up to take part and the cost.  Here are the menu choices you’ll have:

BACON-BOURBON TENDERLOIN

Eight ounces of sliced beef tenderloin cooked medium and finished with a bacon & bourbon-infused demi glaze.

CHICKEN MARSALA

Eight ounces of boneless chicken breast sautéed and finished in a sautéed mushroom Marsala wine sauce.

TILAPIA FILET

Fresh baked tilapia topped with lime-soy marinated tomatoes.

SEARED ATLANTIC SALMON

Fresh baked Atlantic salmon filet topped with our homemade béarnaise sauce.

 

SATURDAY, 16 SEPTEMBER

 

The reunion officially begins with our reception that will be pool-side beginning at 5:00 PM and lasting until 7:00 PM.  There’ll be a pay-as-you-go bar and a fabulous finger-food buffet.  Here’s what we’ll have:

 

Carving Station with Ham and Turkey, rolls and condiments

Seven-Layer Dip and Hummus

Pita Points

Tortilla Chips

Antipasto Display

Fresh Vegetable Display with Spring Onion Dip

Domestic Cheese and Fruit Display

We hope to have some late ‘50’s/early ‘60’s music playing to set the mood.  Following the reception, we’ll adjourn to the Hospitality Room so that the fun can continue until the very last person decides it’s bedtime.

 

SUNDAY, 17 SEPTEMBER

 

If sufficient people are interested, we’ll organize a putt-putt tournament on Sunday morning at 10:00 AM.  This will be an “opt-in” function as with the Friday evening dinner.  Be sure to let me know if you’re interested.  You can drop me an email at pjohnson010@carolina.rr.com or phone 980-328-4150.  Details on this, along with how you register are shown further down.

The Corn Hole (beanbag toss) boards will be available for your enjoyment and we’ll be putting together a tournament schedule, so if you’re interested be sure to see below how to sign up for that.  We’ll draw for teams…no slipping in of “ringers!”  J Even if there’s not sufficient interest in having a tournament, the boards will be set up in the Hospitality Room, and will be on the beach for a period of time Sunday.  Drop in any time and challenge someone to a game!     

 

MONDAY, 18 SEPTEMBER

Monday is the reunion’s busiest day.  It begins with our annual business meeting from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM.  This is our one time together for the year when we can talk about any group issues anyone wants to bring up.  Be sure to think of topics you’re interested in bringing up, or questions you’d like answered.  During this same time frame, there will be a ladies’ tea held in the Hospitality Room.  All you ladies be sure to be there!  Good conversation, a nice selection of tea, and many healthy and not-so-healthy munchies.

 

Monday evening from 6:00 PM until about 9 or 10, we’ll have our annual banquet followed by a short awards program.  As noted earlier, we’ll have a little different menu, but some anticipated very fine food.  Here’s what you can look forward to:

Following the banquet, we’ll have Gary Powers Jr. as a speaker.  Gary’s father, Francis Gary Powers, was the U-2 pilot whose plane was brought down over the Soviet Union on May 1, 1960.  Gary Jr. was instrumental in the forming and continuation of the Cold War Museum; wrote “Operation Overflight,” a chronology of the U-2 incident and the parallel international situation; and now has a new book out titled “Letters from a Soviet Prison” which is a compilation of the never-before released personal journal and correspondence of his father’s time in confinement.  Gary has been our banquet speaker in the past, outlining the status and future plans for the Cold War Museum.  This year he will provide further updates on the museum, on his personal status, and of course detailed information about his current book. 

Following Gary’s talk, we’ll have a short program, and at the conclusion of that, Gary will have a book signing. 

Finally, we’ll gather in the Hospitality Room where we’ll take the traditional group photo followed by a last evening of good conversation with great friends.

 

TUESDAY, 19 SEPTEMBER

The last event of the reunion will be our departure breakfast buffet; open from 7:30 to 9:00 AM.  Try to get there as early as you can, and hang around as long as you can.  Many people will be leaving early and this will be your last chance for goodbye handshakes and hugs.  The menu will include the usual breakfast items of coffee, tea, juices, scrambled eggs shredded breakfast potatoes, sausage, bacon, and biscuits.  BUT, in addition to that we’ll have an Oatmeal Bar and a Yogurt Bar with berries.  YUM! 

 

I really hope you can make the reunion.  Good friends, good conversations, good food, good digs, and GOOD TIMES!   

 

HOW TO MAKE SURE YOU’RE INCLUDED IN THE FUN

 

Here are some basic guidelines that will be expanded upon in the near future:

·      If you think you might make the reunion:

1.    even if you’re not sure, drop me an email at pjohnson010@carolina.rr.com.  It’ll help in estimating the number of people we should expect.  You can confirm later. 

2.    Be sure to include if you’re interested in the Friday evening dinner, the Corn Hole tournament,  the Putt-Putt tournament, or the 9-Hole Golf. 

3.     The reunion fee and most other elective costs are provided below, and any remaining will be added as soon as they are determined. 

4.   ALL FEES AND ELECTIVE COSTS NEED TO BE PAID PRIOR TO THE REUNION.  When you’ve confirmed that you’ll be attending, you’ll receive a form that outlines each individual cost.  Fill it out and send it to our treasurer: Mark Gransden, 4743 Sandpointe Dr., New Port Richey, FL 34655.

 

·      IF YOU’RE ALREADY SURE YOU’LL BE MAKING THE REUNION,

1.     you can go ahead and register with the Beach Cove Resort right away.  Just call them at 843-918-9000.

2.    THE ROOM RATES (all inclusive) ARE CONFIRMED AND ARE AS FOLLOWS:

o  DOUBLE - $163.17 PER NIGHT

3.      BE SURE TO TELL THEM YOU’RE WITH THE KAS REUNION GROUP!  That’ll guarantee you get our special room rate.
