DICK HERBERT

A Karamürsel Survivor

" Before, During and After Karamursel"

Graduated from high school in 1958 and enlisted in the Air Force.  Was finally ordered to report on January 16, 1959.  After basic at Lackland went to Sheppard AFB (Wichita Falls, TX)
for tech school.  First assignment was to an AACS Squadron at McGuire AFB, NJ.
After a couple of months there I got the word that I was going to
Karamursel.  Arrived April 1960 and, with a 3 month extension, left January 1962.  Near as I can remember. I was assigned to Charlie Flight for a couple of months, and the rest of my time on Stable Able.  Took a consec to 6915th RSM, Hof, Germany, for one year.  Reenlisted and extended there for 9 months.  Finally returned to ZI in September 1963.  After being overseas for 3 1/2 years there was some "culture shock".
Next assignment was AFSSO Headquarters Air Force at Pentagon.  Was there until August 1965 and sent to Tuslog Det 3-1, Trabzon.  By then it was a 15 month assignment, not 12 like it was when we were at mainsite.  Decision made to get out!
     Discharged November 1966.
Shirley and I got married December 1966, and still hanging on.  Have two daughters and two grand-daughters with another one on the way.
Spent career with US Postal Service.  First as a clerk/carrier, then supervisor and finally was a Postmaster.  Retired end of 1996.
Like to spend my spare time playing golf and spoiling grandkids.  Enjoyed reunion 2000 and hope to see more 291's next year.
