I was stationed in Karamursel from May 1960 to Oct 61. For my first
few
months I was a day worker while I waited for my clearance to come. I
worked in the Navy maintenance shop and if my memory serves me right it
was out by the Navy and Air Force ops buildings. Once the clearance
finally came in I was assigned to a watch section and assumed the duties
as a Morse code operator. I played basketball and softball and I DO
remember we had a pretty good Navy Day workers basketball team. I wasn't
much of a "Bul" hound but did go in once a month to see the sites
and let
off a little steam. Remember some of the Navy section parties at the
Karavan, but for the life of me I can't remember the guy's name that put
those things together. Like many others, Turkey was my first overseas
assignment and it was educational and eye opening to say the least.
After my
eighteen month tour I was stationed in Nicosia, Cyprus where I
re-enlisted then served on four ships, a couple of more overseas tours and
retired in 1985 after 26 years as an E-7 (RMC). Worked for Lockheed Martin
in Grand Prairie, TX as an Industrial Security Rep. Retired from there in
2001 and now am fully retired and live in Lago Vista, TX which is just
north of Austin.
